The Things I'm Thinking About

Winter Storm

As I write this, we’re getting hit by our first winter storm of the season, and by tomorrow, we should have a few inches on the ground.  Not a milestone that I relish, to be sure.  Winter, for me, means another long stint of a cold workshop, dashing out to hammer out one thing or another and then getting back into the house before my hands are so cold as to be painful.

Business Impact

This is frustrating for me, but this winter I may have to resign myself to my fate.  I simply don’t have the money to finish the insulation work and install a gas heater in the garage right now.  I haven’t had a full-time job since late June, and with a new child on the way any day now (we’re due in early December, but labor has already started), I simply haven’t the cash, nor the time.  I’ve considered running an Indiegogo or Kickstarter campaign to raise the funding, but I am uncertain as to how well this would work.

Thus, things will start to slow down as it gets colder out there.  By the middle of December, I suspect production will be at a crawl until late March.

If I opt for the Indiegogo or Kickerstarter campaign, I’ll announce that here and on my email newsletter.

Personal Impact

This, of course, means it’s time for off-season training.  Given the improvements I saw on the bike this year in my speed and endurance, just from riding with some regularity, I’m going to do some training with an eye on racing again in 2014.  I’ll try to get out on the 29er a few times over the course of the season, but I suspect I’ll be doing a lot of stationary trainer time.  In addition to that, there’ll be some kettlebell-based abuse, snowshoeing, and running.  Hopefully, this will ease the transition of the seasons for me and keep me mostly sane.
