Workshop Problems
Business // Dan // September 11, 2012 //
o the workshop, she’s finished. Which means that (mostly) everything is put away and organized and thoughtfully located. However, it also means that I can’t find shit, as evidenced by the photo above. It happens.
I’m pretty sure that was the case, anyway. The picture was taken during part of a timelapse while I worked on getting the final organization done and then started in on som…

What’s Up?
Business // Dan // September 7, 2012 //
Things are crazy around here — the garage remodel/overhaul took longer than planned. But we’re getting back to it — this weekend every free moment I have will be applied to getting back ahead of the curve on the production schedule. Which is, y’know, awesomesauce.
So in addition to some fast fabrication work, I’ll also be doing the following:
ordering some stuffinstalling som…

Not Quite There Yet
Business // Dan // August 27, 2012 //
bviously, I’m not quite there yet. I slogged through Sunday in a lot of pain (lower back, primarily, but also shoulders and forearms) — but managed to finish priming and painting the walls, finish building the first workbench, and got about halfway through the second. I’ve been debating holding off on the third bench until I actually have the benchtop mill, but I’m debating…

Man-Cave, Part One
Business // Dan // August 22, 2012 //
So last year, when Kate and I decided to take advantage of the down market and buy a house, I had two things I wanted: an open floorplan (which is not germane to this blog post), and a three-car garage (which is). The plan was to use the third bay as a spot for Pallas Athena to really kick off and grow. As it happens, I’ve absorbed about 1.5 bays (and I park my car in the driveway), and had…

o yeah, the big news right now isn’t the painful crash I had last weekend while riding in Minnesota’s Scenic State Park (what an uninspiring name) — the big news is that I have a LOT of stuff to do in the coming 1-2 weeks, as I’ve finally gotten some serious funding for the biz.
Got orders going in to Anvil, Enco, Nova, and Alex Meade. Got to hit up the local steel supply place for a…

Black Friday Acquisitions
Business News // Dan // November 28, 2011 //
So last Friday, I did the unthinkable. I ventured forth and did some Black Friday shopping. God help me. During Thanksgiving Day at my mom’s place, I happened upon the Home Depot ads, which showed a 26-inch, 9-drawer roll-away tool chest for $149. The store opened at 5 a.m., so I got up at four, got my shit together and rolled over to the Shakopee location. I was around 20th in line when t…

Greenlight!

Very excited to announce that my CFO (Chief Financial Officer, AKA “Wife”) approved the project to upgrade the electrical in the garage and to insulate/drywall the whole thing. By the end of October, I should have a very well-appointed garage — extra electrical, insulated, drywalled, with a huge copy of the headbadge painted on the wall. And new workbenches, but I’ll be doing that on my own…

Preparing for Winter
Bikes Business // Dan // October 4, 2011 //
So tonight, after the office, I’ll be making a Home Depot run. It’s amazing how often I’m there, being a new homeowner. I do think there’ll be a day where my number of visits begins to drop, but man. Not soon, I suspect. Tonight’s run is so that I can pick the brains of some specialists on the nature of insulating and drywalling my garage, so that I can work through the winter.
The other…

The One in Which I Whine About Things
Uncategorized // Dan // October 2, 2011 //
1. Do you have any idea how tough it is to justify building yourself a Pugsley/Moonlander bike when it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever really ride in the cold/snow? Man, it’s tough. A past history of frostbite and hypothermia rendered me highly susceptible to cold injuries. Even having to do things in gloves here in February can leave my hands hurting so bad it feels like they’re being crushed…

From Humble Beginnings
Business // Dan // September 19, 2011 //
As you’ve probably noticed from the pictures I post on here, I don’t have the super-fancy workshop that a lot of other builders have. There’s not $20,000 of Anvil fixtures laying about, nor racks full of tubing. I don’t post nifty pictures of freshly-TIG’ed titanium. There’s not a lovingly cared-for Bridgeport mill in the background.
No, I make do with what I’ve got and can afford. I’m…
